Some travel videos stay with you long after you’ve watched them. For Sonja and me, Flying the Nest’s journey through Germany’s Bavarian Alps is one of those videos.

We first watched it years ago, when we were beginning to discover travel creators on YouTube. The towering mountains, incredibly green countryside and peaceful Alpine scenery immediately grabbed our attention. More importantly, we loved the way Stephen and Jess brought us along for the journey, talking to the camera and sharing what was happening as they experienced it.

That style of storytelling helped turn watching travel videos into our Sunday tradition—and years later, it became part of the inspiration behind Sonja’s Way.

An Unexpected Adventure in the Mountains

Based near Berchtesgaden, their adventure takes an unexpected turn when they set out looking for a small mountain farm for lunch.

The drive leads higher into the mountains until a locked road forces them to leave the car and continue on foot. What begins as a simple lunch stop becomes one of our favorite parts of the video. They hike through spectacular countryside, eventually discovering the farm tucked away in the mountains, where they enjoy hot chocolate overlooking a view that seems almost too beautiful to be real.

It’s exactly the kind of unplanned travel moment that makes their videos so enjoyable. Instead of simply showing you where they went, they make you feel like you’re figuring it out right alongside them.

The Beauty of Königssee

Then comes Königssee, one of the most memorable landscapes in the video.

Surrounded by steep Alpine mountains, the deep mountain lake feels almost hidden from the rest of the world. Stephen and Jess board one of the quiet electric boats and travel across the water toward St. Bartholomä, with its distinctive red-domed church appearing beneath the mountains.

Watching the scenery unfold from the boat is breathtaking—and their genuine reactions make the experience even better.

That combination of beautiful destinations, unexpected discoveries and storytelling is why we chose this video for Featured Travel. It reminds us of what first made us fall in love with discovering the world this way.

The Bavarian Alps are still very much on our list of places we’d love to experience for ourselves. Until then, videos like this let us enjoy a little of that Alpine magic from home.
